Privacy Policy

Chowdr is an invite-only app for collecting recipes, planning meals, making grocery lists and cooking with friends. This policy explains what information Chowdr collects, why, and who it's shared with. "Chowdr", "we" and "us" mean the people who run Chowdr. Questions go to support@chowdr.co.
What we collect
- Your account: your name, email address and profile photo from the sign-in method you use (Apple, Google or email), and the username and profile you set up in Chowdr.
- What you add to Chowdr: recipes, including recipes and web pages you import and photos of recipes you scan, recipe lists, notes, ratings and photos, your meal plan, grocery lists, and what you post and share with friends.
- Your connections: the friends you follow and the people in your household, who share your grocery lists and meal plan.
- Your devices: the device model, operating system and app version you use, and a token for sending you notifications if you allow them.
- Diagnostic data: crash reports and error details, sent with your user ID and username so we can tell whether a problem affects one person or many. These don't include your email address, IP address or what you were typing.
Chowdr doesn't use advertising, sell your information, or track you across other companies' apps and websites.
How we use it
- To run Chowdr: keep your recipes, plans and lists, sync them across your devices and household, and show what you share to the friends you share it with.
- To improve imported recipes: we keep the pages you import recipes from, so we can import them again when the importer gets better. Pages you share from your browser are cleaned of scripts and hidden form fields before they're saved, and are deleted with your account.
- To read recipes from photos you scan, such as cookbook or magazine pages and recipe cards. The photos are sent to an AI model (Claude, on Amazon Bedrock) to read the recipe. Amazon doesn't keep them or use them to train AI models. While this feature is new, we keep the photos and what was read from them for 60 days, in storage only Chowdr's developers can access, to fix mistakes in how recipes are read; then they're deleted. A photo of the finished dish cut from a page becomes your recipe's photo if you save it.
- To add helpful details to recipes, such as tags, step-by-step ingredient amounts, nutrition and drawings. Recipe text is processed by AI models for this. Apart from that and the photos you scan, your information isn't.
- To find and fix bugs and crashes, and to contact you about your account or a problem you reported.
Assistants and Alexa
If you connect an AI assistant (such as Claude) or the Chowdr skill for Amazon Alexa to your account, it can read and change your recipes, grocery lists and meal plan, as far as you allow when you connect it. What you say to Alexa and to assistants is handled by Amazon and the assistant's provider under their own privacy policies; Chowdr receives only the request, such as the item to add. You can disconnect an assistant at any time by asking us, or by disabling the skill in the Alexa app.
Who we share it with
We share information only as needed to run Chowdr, with these service providers, who process it for us:
- Google Cloud and Firebase: sign-in, the app's database, file storage and notifications.
- Amazon Web Services: recipe search, saved import pages, backups, assistant connections, and AI models for recipe details and for reading the photos you scan (Amazon Bedrock).
- Cloudflare: AI models that draw recipe illustrations, from recipe text.
- Sentry: crash and error reports.
- Apple: push notifications, and sign-in if you use Sign in with Apple.
Other Chowdr users see what you choose to share with them: your profile, the recipes and posts you share, and, for your household, your shared grocery lists and meal plan. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you have an account. When you delete your account, we delete your information within 30 days, except where we must keep it by law. Public web pages fetched to import a recipe aren't personal information and may be kept. To delete your account, email support@chowdr.co from the address you signed up with.
Your choices and rights
You can see and change most of your information in the app. You can ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing support@chowdr.co. Depending on where you live, you may have other rights under local law, and we'll honor them.
Security
Information is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access to it is limited to the people and systems that run Chowdr. No service is perfectly secure, but we take care to protect your information.
Children
Chowdr isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes
We'll update this policy when Chowdr changes how it handles information, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app or by email.
